How to Measure Social Media ROI

As with any industry, the "boys on top" always want to know just three things:

1. What's it going to cost?
2. How do we implement it?
3. How do we measure returns (and what returns we can expect)?

When it comes to Social Media, we find that 90% of the time Marketing Managers and PR Executives have no idea how to answer any of them. It's not so shocking, really; when they went through college and/or got experience in their field it was a different time. Don't blame them, "just keep reading."

Gabriel Gonzalez, CEO & Founder of g3nius Social Media Consulting is here to help you guys, out! In this video Gabriel outlines 11 [mostly] free tools for taking a "current snapshot" of your brand/company exposure and then tracking and measuring your Social Media campaign. We have provided the links below for your convenience. Enjoy =).

News - Gabriel Gonzalez to be at GSMI's SMSS!

CEO of g3nius-SMC to hold 3-hour workshop at Social Media Strategies Summit

GSMI's (gsmiweb.com) Social Media Strategies Summit is a 3-day event that focuses on how companies can use Social Media to drive profits. Gabriel Gonzalez, CEO & Founder of g3nius-SMC (g3nius-smc.com), is scheduled to give a 3-hour workshop to explain the "nuts and bolts" of tactically using Social Media in this new age.

The topic of Social Media has become very popular over the past several years. Much like the Search Engine Optimization boom, there are many companies and organizations, as well as a plethora of online content, devoted to being first in line when potential clients come running for help. Also much like the SEO rush, many companies feel that Social Media was either a fad or did not provide enough value to devote much needed resources toward. This outlook is slowing changing - the general opinion moving from "optional" to "MUST HAVE."

In hopes of providing some light at the end of the Social Media "tunnel," the Global Strategic Management Institute is holding the Social Media Strategies Summit - "with in-depth case studies from the nuts and bolts, to microblogging and maintaining online communities - you will leave with a refreshed vision to take your marketing plan to the next level for 2010 and beyond"

Gabriel Gonzalez of g3nius Social Media Consulting will be leading the "Nuts and Bolts" workshop on the first day of the conference (September 15, 2010). The workshop starts at 1:00pm Pacific and will run approximately three hours. The outline of the workshop is explained below:

Look at the leading businesses today and you will find them using Twitter, Facebook groups, blogs and online discussion forums. It is very easy for anyone to set up these accounts. However, once activated, how do you take it to the max? This workshop will take the attendee through a review of results form business case studies in which they took companies and lead them through successful social media strategies. Specific highlights of this workshop include:

 • Distinguish what social media tools are necessary for business success
 • Learn how to measure success within your own company when utilizing social media strategies
 • Identify tools and guidelines for launching a social media campaign

In addition, Gabriel will wrap up by giving describing a list of "Must Ask" questions for use when choosing your Social Media Consultant - these will prove invaluable to anyone who is looking to move their business into this space but is not yet ready to devote in-house resources.

Starting to Understand Social Media

Starting off, we'd like to share this document. Simply put, it's a rough service outline. Is the wording perfect? No. Is the tone always correct? No. This is the copy that I wrote as a rough proposal when I wanted to break g3nius Social Media Consulting into it's own company.

After attending literally dozens of these so-called "Social Media - How to Expand Your Business" conferences and Seminars, I realized I had more to offer in this space; this was two years ago. Now, I figure it's time to pass some of that knowledge on!

What can you get from this document? Well, read it and find out! I promise it's not super sales-y - it's almost more of a whitepaper (maybe I'll do some editing and turn it into that, what do you think?). Ciao for now.

Social Graph - Check How You Are Connected!

Demo Social Graph API - Site Connectivity

Example Apps

What does this demo show?

This shows how your sites are connected. The top section lists your other sites that are connected to the URLs you entered ("me" links). The 'Score' column shows how well-linked each is - green for fully linked, red for just one. 'Possible connections' is a list of other sites that link to your URLs with 'me' links.

Where do these URLs come from?

These are public links on websites, marked up using Open standards such as XFN and FOAF, designed to express relationships online.

To use XFN to connect sites, add rel="me" to your link like this:

me

More details on XFN.

To use FOAF, create a FOAF file and link to it from your web page. More details on FOAF.

What is the Social Graph API?

The Social Graph API makes information about the public connections between people on the Web easily available and useful for developers. Developers can query this public information to offer their users dramatically streamlined "add friends" functionality and other useful features.

For more information, please visit the Social Graph API FAQ.

How are your sites connected?

Start by entering URLs to your blogs and profile pages. Enter one per line:

If you don't have a blog or profile page, try: kevinmarks.com or bradfitz.com

Info on your connected sites

Using "new"-ish code let's the internet know which links are you and who your friends are! As more and more applications and websites take advantage of this information, you'll see a more and more connected world! Check it out.
